02/24/2003 Entry: "mommy!"

You know how you're away from home and you're just craving some home cooked food? I feel that way everyday I'm here. I'm kicking myself for not bringing the personal rice cooker my mom gave me so I could cook me and my friends some good food. If you haven't tried any filipino food, you're missing out. Check out the recipe page for a few of my favorites.

click to enlargeSpeaking of my mom, her birthday is on the 25th. I can't forget to give her a call and wish her a happy birthday. She's turning... well let's say she's turning even more young at heart. I love that woman. I love that plasticware and soy sauce packet hoarding woman. I admit I worry though, every year older that my parents get I wonder how much longer they'll be alive for me to spend as much quality time with them. They eat & live healthy, so I should be sure that they'll grow to a ripe old age and will see grandchildren by one of their daughters. But I've never experienced death at a personal level so I guess you can say that I'm afraid of death. I don't know when the good Lord above will call another one and sometimes that uncertainty gets the best of me. I start thinking about a day of not having my parents in my life and I start crying. I'd sacrifice a limb or years off of my life to keep them alive, but then again I'm sure life just gets tiring sooner or later. When God says it's time, it'll be the right time.

I'm just about to finish The Color of Water A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother by James McBride. This novel is an incredible memoir and wonderfully put together as a way to honor a great mother. He writes his personal accounts of certain events experienced with his mom throughout his life, and flashes back and forth to stories told to him by his mother. He wrote about the struggles within the family circle and the strugges of the family throughout changes in society through the decades. If I could ever write my own novel, I'd devote it to my parents like McBride. There must be some kind of plotline to my life... but I also have a feeling that my novel would sell straight from the dollar store. Anyway, this novel is a #1 New York Times Bestseller so that's one indication it's a good read. If you can, pick it up and give it a read and tell me what you think.

Mom
Mom, for all these years
I'm sure you've had
a heart full of hopes and dreams
and special longings of your own.

And you've always listened and shared
my dreams, my wishes, and my heartaches
as if they were the only ones in the world...

That takes a lot of love, Mom
I understand that now
and I hope you realize
how much I thank you...
how much I love you...
and how much I wish you happiness.

Thanks you guys! <3

Mel, my mom does my financial papers too... The first time I tried filling it out by myself but I left so many empty spaces that I just gave it to her to take care of! She certainly is a lifesaver.

Oohh! It's so pretty around here! Not that it wasn't before, but you understand.

My mom does everything for my financial aid right? All she does is show me a paper and say, "Sign." I looked at her last time she did this and said, "Please don't die." She started laughing. I was like, "Dude! I'd be so lost about so much if you die. So just stay alive 'til I die."

i am in love with your site. you're a layout genius. mmm, it's prettyful.

also, i so know what you're talking about with your mom/parents- my mom just had a birthday last week, and sometimes i worry about how they're getting older- but what you say is true, when the time comes, it's the right time. what's important is savoring the now. (and the great cooking! ;-))
