02/12/2003 Entry: "Golden Girls, V-Day, Peace, Guy"

Picture this: Sicily, 1958.

Be nice and send a Golden Girls valentine e-card to a friend today.

Despite me never being able to have an actual "Valentine" to share friday's special day with, I still have all the love in the world from my family and friends. I even got cards and candy from people in the dorm, so nice! I do plan to give back somehow mind you, in the form of kick ass mix cds made just for my friends and a donation of a pint of blood at the blood drive tomorrow. Thanks to a friendly email and Maly's awareness, I'm also eagerly awaiting for some more information about seeing the Vagina Monologues: V-Day Edition either at Yale or somewhere near home. Speaking of awareness, locally there's another protest/rally held on campus today in opposition of the Connecticut State University system tuition hike. I'm noticing that professors were fired for the University to save more money, but because they've begun accepting tons more students into the school, its demanded them to go and hire more teachers more specifically they've given a lot of UConn professors second jobs. It's a vicious cycle. Like Joan said, there's something fraudulent going on in my school and I'm quite disappointed that I don't know what it is to really know what to say or do. Since I mentioned a protest, there are going to be anti-war demonstrations held on February 15th all over the world. Find a location near you and get involved. [Link via Lane]

Now for a little story. This morning I got back to the dorm after eating breakfast and there was hardly anbody in the first floor lobby except for a deskworker shuffling around in the office, a guy waiting at the desk, and the tv turned onto a music channel. The tv was playing a Dixie Chicks video for the song "Landslide," my favorite Fleetwood Mac song. While waiting for the elevator I heard the guy quietly mouthing along with the Chicks' singing and as I walked into the elevator I started to sing along with the tv thinking he wouldn't mind since he sounded like he liked the song too. I only sang a line of the song and as the elevator door closed the guy heard me singing along and quickly turned around to look at me, as if he was surprised to hear someone else singing along. Now, what would be really funny is if he'd see me again and recognize me as the girl who sang the Landslide song and I'd make a new friend. What would be even funnier is if he further admitted that he was wondering who I was, who it was who also liked the same song he did, possibly sprouting a relationship, kind of in a sappy-but-cute-ala-John Cusack-type-of-movie-way. A girl can only dream and laugh about it.

For those wondering what song is playing in yet another Saturn commercial, you'll have to do a little work by searching through the archives or joining the message board.
