Julia wrote an entry last week about her relationship with her mom. Understanding inside jokes between the both of you, that kind of a bond is special. My mom and I have that. We also have other quirks to our relationship. I'm not sure if anyone else is like me, but sometimes it's just nice to be in the presence of someone you love or just a short talk on the phone to hear someone's voice is what comforts me.
So I called mom today just to say hello and see how everyone's doing at home. Small talk like that is nice, I like to keep up with family when I'm not around. Sometimes we have good phone conversations. Sometimes it's just a question and answer period then a, "gimme a call again sometime soon." This afternoon's conversation was the latter.
Mom: Hello? Me: Hi mom, it's Erma. Mom: oh hello! where were you last night? I asked Jane and she said you were downstairs. Were you in the basement studying? Me: No, I was hanging out with a friend while she was working at the front desk on the first floor. Mom: Oh. So have you studied today? Me: A little bit. I'm taking breaks in between. Mom: Are you getting enough sleep? Me: Yeah. Mom: Did you eat breakfast and lunch yet? Me: Yeah. Mom: Did you eat dinner yet? Me: No, the cafe's closed right now. Mom: Why?? But you need to eat! Me: It's 4:30. It's not time for dinner yet. Mom: Oh right. Well go eat dinner soon. You need to eat all your meals and sleep 8 hours every night and study. I'm gonna go out to the garden for a bit so you can call me tomorrow. (in a shy tone) i love you... Me: I love you too! Bye. Mome: ok bye! Click.
It doesn't take much to make my mom happy these days. As long as I'm eating, sleeping, and studying I'm still going to be her good little girl.

The relationship I'm having with my mother resembles the one you're having with yours. My mom doesn't care about my grades. As long as I'm doing my studying, eating at least three meals a day, and sleeping, she's the happiest woman in the world. Too bad I don't eat as much as she wants me to. I'm working on it. I feel you on the whole just 'hearing a familiar voice' even if its just for a few minutes. It's definitely comforting.
