09/16/2002 Entry: "consciousness. fish."

Do you ever hear people talking about the "subconscious" mind? Not to sound like a jerk, but the term doesn't exist. Not in psychology, at least. There are three levels of the conscious mind: Conscious, preconscious, and unconscious.

I learn something new everyday. Here's something else that I learned that might be interesting.

How do you pronounce this word: GHOTI

Are you talking about the convicted and recently deceased mob boss John Gotti? Or the type of mustache that guys wear on their chin? For those who don't speak english, they'll most likely say the word is FISH.

How so? Well, in english when we pronounce the words "enough," "tough," and "rough" we make the "f" sound in place of "gh." They get mixed up when they're wrong pronouncing "through" as "throof." When we pronounce the word "women" we make the "o" sound as "i" and that also confuses them when "woman" doesn't use the "i" sound. Finally, words like "attention" and "action" use the "sh" sound in place of "ti." So they put it all together coming up with the word "fish."

  F       I      SH
GH    O     TI

Does that give you a new perspective on the difficulty of others trying to learn the english language?

oh no, my french teacher told us about it after half the class admitted that it's difficult for them to learn french. he tried to get us to think from a different point of view.

FISH?! ROFL~!!!!!
I would rather pronounce "through" as "froo" not "thruf"... although "tough" IS "touf"... oh my, can you imagine "froof"? LOL
