05/30/2002 Entry: "Choir Concert last night"

memory exercise Hollywood

The concert last night was great. It started at 7:30pm, but I was a bit late and got there at 8:15pm. I was glad I didn't miss much as an elementary school concert just finished up when I got to the school. I was really happy to see that Doug and Brett (also of Fitch choir alumni, class of '00) came to watch, and as I was thinking that I'd grab a seat way in the back I sat with them in the front row. I asked Chris to tell Mr. Frascarelli that I would be attending but I wasn't sure if he was able to mention it to him until I found time to talk to him sometime after the concert.

Chamber Choir and Concert Chorus sounded great. I was surprised to see how well they performed seeing how there were practically all new members, but not surprised that it wasn't something they couldn't do after winning first place across the board in Virginia Beach last month (congrats kids!). Chamber Choir was bigger and Concert Chorus was practically all female. Their sound projected quite beautifully into the big auditorium without the help of the sound barriers that were not put up this time around. Every song deserved a good round of applause. And for once I was able to sit and listen to a choir without having to be the one on stage singing! Although I did have to join in with Doug and Brett in singing our old parts in some of the songs that we sang when we were in choir in previous years. Oh, the memories.

As the concert was coming to a close I hoped that a lot of the kids that performed may have noticed my presence in the audience, and they did. Mr. Frasc mentioned in his closing comments that he's planning to gather together all the choir alumni and hopefully have us all together again and sing for one last time, pointed out the silly guys sitting next to me, and (ha!) I surprised him when he saw me sitting with them. Afterwards a lot of them came to see me, Ally, Doug, and Brett. I got lots of hugs without having to ask for them! Chris, Matt, Mike, Amanda, Mandy, Marissa, and a few other people were happy to see me as I was as happy to see them. I missed them so much. You don't understand!

Ally and I had a good talk with Mr. Frasc and I congratulated him on being awarded Teacher of the Year a few days ago. He definitely deserved that award. All music teachers deserve awards. He's not your regular high school teacher. He just doesn't stand up in front of a class and teaches, hands out homework, and gives out grades. His job calls for him to teach students to read music and sing, enabling kids to be able to use their voices in such wonderful ways. He has that special dedication in and out of the classroom. Not only does he have classes but he takes his students out of the classroom to various music festivals, small field trips, singing in the community, a lot of which takes up about half (maybe more) of his free time that he could otherwise be spending with his wife and kids. For five years of hard work and dedication there's nobody else who would have been more deserving of the award this time around besides him, after all that the man has taught me and shown me of what I am capable of doing.

Gah. If I were to ever go back to high school, I'd just go back to choir. No doubt. So that's the highlight of goings on in town this week.

Oh, you need a comment!

Hey Erma!

I had some of my best times at school while in choir too.

But I didn't go back to my high school. In fact it's not a high school anymore. Those times seem like fantasy to me now.
